Susan personally selects and picks flora from her Cornish garden, perched high on a hill in St Austell which backs on to the wild, rugged Cornish landscape. Local florists also give her surplus flowers to use. She then carefully presses and dries the plant material over a period of 4 to 12 weeks (depending upon the type of specimen) using traditional methods without the intervention of chemicals or microwave presses. Instead she relies on her years of experience of observing and handling plant material to gauge progress with the drying process. She also presses and dries small, windswept pieces of seaweed from local beaches.
The dried plant material is then laid, with light catching mixed media on beautiful, luxurious backing fabrics of silk, satin and organza. Susan uses mixed media finds like luxurious, fine vintage metallic threads, pieces of vintage jewellery and sometimes precious and semi-precious stones. This involves many hours of dedicated, patient work, often hand stitching and securing the design late into the night.
The finished design is photographed and then framed in Bodmin. All mounts are acid free PH neutral. Medium and larger pieces of artwork are backed using a marine standard, moisture resistant board. Specialist UV protective glass can be supplied.
Many of Susan’s original artworks find their way into personal collections both here in the UK and internationally to Australia and America. She has also completed commissions for clients in London and Crete.
Susan’s work continues to evolve and she will be adding more pictures and news of her work to her blog and social media.
